10 Tips for a Faster, Easier Claims Process

The claims process isn’t fun. But with these 10 tips, it can be simple and easy. The more information you provide up front, the sooner you’ll be on the road to recovery.

  • Take note of the specific date, time and location of the loss.
  • If the incident involved other parties, write down their contact and insurance information.
  • If anyone was hurt, note injuries, police, fire and ambulance units that responded and, if known, which hospital or doctors treated the wounded.
  • Take a few well-framed, well-focused pictures of the damage. Your adjuster may need them.
  • Review your declarations page and exclusions, to re-familiarize yourself with your policy.
  • If your insurer has a claims hotline, save it to your phone, or keep the number in your wallet.
  • Many companies let you file claims online or via mobile app. Check with your provider.
  • Have your policy number handy when you call.
  • If temporary repairs are necessary, or if you’re stranded, let your claims rep know.
  • If the check you’re issued doesn’t cover the estimate, or if repairs made are unsatisfactory, contact your adjuster immediately.
